The purpose of this residency, and its urgency, came to fruition upon noticing that the majority of institutions in Cairo are distanced from the South ARD South seeks to bridge the gap, by dedicating its residency to artists from the Global South, with a higher concentration of artists from the continent of Africa, including those in the diaspora. The term Global South does not refer to the geographical south of the globe or even to the literal image of the world divided by the equator; rather, it means peoples who share common social, economic, political, and historical characteristics and conditions. The outcome of such programming will be to reorient and expand cultural and knowledge production, create and revisit southward and lateral solidarity to challenge what has been the status quo of the contemporary art scene in Egypt.
ARD South is a process based, one-to-three month artist residency that includes talks, workshops, master classes and exhibitions by resident practitioners
