In February and March 2023, Dutch artist Christina de Korte participated in an artist residency at the ARD Art Institution in Cairo, Egypt.
During her residency at ARD, Christina delved deeply into the traditional Egyptian textile art of khayamiya, or tentmaking. She apprenticed under a local khayamiya master, Ahmed, learning the intricate techniques of this craft. This hands-on experience not only enriched her understanding of Egyptian artistic traditions but also profoundly influenced her subsequent works, leading to the creation of her “Khayamiya Studies” series.
De Korte’s time in Cairo was marked by a fusion of contemporary art practices with traditional crafts, resulting in a unique body of work that reflects the cultural tapestry of Egypt.
