ARD South Residency
Nyugen E. Smith
We welcomed Caribbean-American artist Nyugen Smith.
Nyugen will participate in a two-month artistic residency as part of the ARD South Residency Program supported by AfreximBank. Nyugen E. Smith is a Caribbean-American interdisciplinary artist based in Jersey City, NJ, primarily working in the areas of mixed media drawing, assemblage, and performance. In his practice he is interested in world-building, informed by ritual, memory, language, history and art-making processes that prioritizes the use of previously used materials, the body, and play; through the prism of Black cultural identity.
During this period, Smith collaborated with local women from the al-Khalifa district, engaging in community-based art projects that explored the rich cultural heritage of the area. This collaboration resulted in artworks that blended Smith’s interdisciplinary approach with traditional Egyptian art forms, fostering a cross-cultural dialogue between his Caribbean roots and Egyptian traditions.
The residency culminated in an exhibition showcasing the collaborative pieces, highlighting themes of identity, heritage, and the shared histories of the African diaspora.
Nyugen holds an MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His work has been presented at the Peréz Art Museum, Blanton Museum, Frist Art Museum, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Newark Museum, and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, among others.
