Johannes Rave

The word “balance,” which is the same in English and German, originates from two Latin terms: “bi,” meaning two, and “lanx,” meaning weighing pan. Balance is achieved when both scales are equally filled or weigh the same. In finance, the term describes a balanced relationship between income and expenditure. In the food industry, particularly with coffee, it refers to a blend where no single property of the varieties predominates. Thus, the concept revolves around achieving equilibrium, often requiring nuanced considerations.

Johannes Rave explores the term “balance” in a series of watercolors. He believes watercolor is the ideal medium for this subject due to its inherent instability. Every drop of ink or watercolor interacts with the surface, altering the color and its state between dry, damp, and wet. As colors meet on the paper, one often dominates, pushing the other back, yet leaving space for their mixture.

This dynamic interplay of colors adds excitement to the painting process. The lines in Rave’s works serve various purposes: they may stylize a curved surface to illustrate instability or connect pictorial elements to create visual balance. In the “BALANCE” series, he translates an unbalanced world into a formal language that conveys vulnerability while also expressing confidence through the strength of color and design

Karima Klasen

Karima Klasen’s position in the exhibition highlights the dynamic connections between space, place, and time in Cairo during her artist-in-residence stay at ARD International. Through site-specific installations, wall works, colorful graphics, and posters, a vibrant visual narrative emerges, surpassing the original concept of the show and responding to the uniqueness of the environment, the city’s vibe, and the diverse encounters with Cairo’s urban culture.
The themes of her works address personal subjects related to the present and future. They reflect the artist’s exploration of universal and individual values, current circumstances, and the roles of community and the individual in a social and global context. These introspections have shaped and influenced the presentation and interventions in their current form. The gallery space becomes an active protagonist, shaping the works while simultaneously undergoing transformation in a reciprocal dialogue. The colorful graphics and geometric elements serve as a universal language, inviting dialogue with viewers through the space. The exhibition engages not only with physical aspects but also with social architecture. The works are not presented as completed pieces but rather as part of an ongoing artistic process, expressing an open and playful approach to the conditions and influences of the moment, using the space as a canvas.

POSTCARDS from/to STUTTGART/CAIRO

A collaborative photographic and participative project that explores the visual and cultural connections between the cities of Cairo and Stuttgart. Conceived by two artists, the project focuses on creating an exchange of perspectives by presenting small-format photographs of each city, inviting viewers to experience these urban landscapes through the eye of a pedestrian.
The artists have captured unassuming yet evocative moments of everyday life in both cities, deliberately avoiding dramatic lighting, altered proportions, or overly staged compositions. Instead, the images reflect what naturally catches a visitor’s attention – a raw, human-scale observation of the characteristics of each city. These postcards show how seemingly simple motifs reveal surprising parallels or striking contrasts shaped by different climates, environments, and cultural contexts.
For example, the green landscapes of Stuttgart are brought into sharp contrast after returning from the warm, sun-drenched vibrancy of Cairo. These observations form the backbone of the project, offering insights into how urban and environmental differences shape perceptions.
The exhibition, which premieres at ARD Art Institution in Cairo before moving to Stuttgart, presents the printed postcards as paired works. Each pair connects a view of Cairo with one of Stuttgart, not through direct parallels, but through an associative and intuitive dialogue between the two places.
Visitors are encouraged to actively engage with the project. Each participant can choose a postcard from the Cairo series and one from Stuttgart to take with them, share, or send. This participatory element fosters a cultural exchange, bridging the two cities in a personal and tangible way.
POSTCARDS from/to STUTTGART/CAIRO invites the audience to consider the nuances of urban life and to reflect on the relationships between them.
